History.
The Oriental Hotel was built in 1876 replacing an early 1850 hotel, The Queen’s Arms, originally owned by John Madigan. The hotel was designed and built by Frederick Kindred who held the license for a period of time.
James E Madigan (son of the above John Madigan) was born at the Queen's Arms Hotel. During his lifetime he held the licence for the Oriental Hotel. He was a successful breeder of some good racehorses, the best of which Was "Carenaught", winner of the " Ascot Thousand" in 1914. James Madigan was Mayor of Tumut in 1904 and 1905'and again in 1912.
The pub was reminiscent of the gold rush days and is a two storey Georgian styled building with parapets & ornaments in the Filigree style. The once extensive and well arranged stables at the rear of the premises contained stalls and loose boxes for about thirty horses. It is believed these were lost in a fire. The buildings and yards together occupied about one and a half acres of ground.
There were many pubs in Tumut and the surrounding district in the early 1900s however over time many have disappeared.
Photos of the pub over the last 100+ years.
